May vlog - posted by Steve Moore for Joe Handley Nice blog about the Chief Destruction Officer. It dovetailed well with my discussions with Paul McKaughan and the articles he has produced recently on deleveraging. My sense is that many historic/traditional missions need significant innovation and likely need to look to the local churches globally as well as the freshly founded or refocused ministries. I don't see much innovation in the historic/traditional mission front but am eager to hear stories of what's happening out there. Thanks again for sharing, Joe Handley

Great issue. My experience is that we teach people well how to fail and evaluate. We seldom teach people how to win and learn! Right now I am using our international people as our CDO function. They are looking at our organization from new eyes and new paradigms. This is really enriching our mission, but (as you said) they need room to try new ideas and models. GREAT VLOG this month!

What would you like to say to our viewers? In the May and June vlogs I'm putting out a call for a guest vlog thought to be posted this fall. I'm giving this group first dibs. Check your group email for me details. I've been talking about uploading and now it's time to keep pushing the envelope in practicing what we preach. So...what would you like to say to our viewers as a guest vlog contributer?

I teach a college religion class, and we have students design their own service learning project. Though teachers could design a more impressive project, students experience greater involvement and purpose this way. It really imparts the "do it yourself" message.

Doing it yourself is always better. Sounds like a good class.

What is the best example of an "upload paradigm" that you have seen in the church or mission community? Where can we turn for models? If you aren't sure what I mean by an "upload paradigm" you need to check out this month's video blog.

Hopefully churches and ministries will strategically venture into Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 before we all get left behind. Thanks for uploading!

I came across an article in USA Today last week that illustrated uploading by highlighting a web site where writers could upload samples of books and other people could vote on their favorites. From this "American Idol" for writers type web site people who had been "rejected" by the elitist and risk averse editors who work for established publishers got book deals from the site with a built in market. What can mission organizations learn from this experiement?

At least every few months I hear from someone encouraging me to visit the latest, greatest one-stop missions info/community structure, and some of them seem pretty nifty. But most of them languish due to lack of cultivation. Seems like these things take time and nurture, especially during the weeks or months before they "tip" (if they ever do) and start to become self-perpetuating.

The March edition of my vlog will go live tomorrow. It is called "The Punkification of Missions: Why operating with an Upload Paradigm won't work in a Download World." I've decided to give the people in my vlog discussion group a sneak preview - just past this URL into your browswer: http://themissionexchange.org/vlogPeek.php In this vlog thought I share an interesting quote from Kevin Kelly, Senior Maverick at Wired Magazine. I'm reading one of his books on my Kindle this week and recently discovered his web site (www.kk.org). I also found a video on Ted.com where he talks about the next 5K days of the Internet. All this flows with my ideas on the punkification of missions. I'd love to hear what you think.

Regardless of your ministry context, the economic downturn is probably having some kind of negative impact on your plans for 2009. The February video blog will go live later today and it is about the importance of hope in leadership. One of the fundamental responsibilities of spiritual leadership is to inspire followers with hope in God and what He is doing. In this video blog thought I make the case that while it is true, hope is not a strategy, without hope a good strategy rarely emerges and is almost never executed. Watch for an email later today announcing the post of this month's vlog and give me your feedback after you have a chance to check it out.

January Video Blog Preview I recorded the January video blog last week. The title is, "What's on your things to stop list?" Every effective leader has the functional equivalent of a 'things to do list,' few have a well thought out things to stop list. My premise is that failure to develop and manage a things to stop list can negatively impact our effectiveness and productivity as much or more as failure to develop and manage a things to do list. What do you think? Watch for the new video blog on January 5th. In the mean time, have a joy filled Christmas and New Year.

Steve, I just watched your latest Vlog on competition and let me just say 'amen'. As a engineer, I often see life and the world from scientific terms. In this case, the importance of opposition force is critical to all existance. The balance between gravity and centripital force allows us to walk. So it is with healthy (just like you described in your three elements) competition. It allows us to have the greatest impact for the Kingdom. Opposing thumbs only allow us to pick things up because of the opposition. But, the opposition only become effective and useful when applied in partnership. Thanks for the stimulating thoughts.

The October video blog is up and I'm raising questions about mission organizations and creation care. I believe the day is fast approaching where prospective parishoners for a church and constituents for a mission organization will include environmental friendliness as one of the factors affecting how likely they are to get involved. What do you think?

In the September vlog I shared the following Jack Welch quote, "If the rate of change inside your organization isn't greater than the rate of change outside your organization, then the end is near." What do you think about that?
